Climate change is already being witnessed in California; earlier snowmelts, shifts in wildlife habitat and more frequent episodes of extreme weather and wildfire. In Nevada County, members of the community are responding to these changes by taking action.
After the success of last year's Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy (APPLE) conference on Peak Oil, and with increased awareness around hurricane Katrina and the recent Time Magazine cover story on Climate Change, event organizer Reinette Senum is confident that this year's subject matter couldn't be more timely.
The all-day conference (9am to 5pm) will make available information, resources, and experts to assist the public in understanding not just the problems presented by climate change, but the potential solutions available for both the community and individuals.
"This conference is not about debating climate change. The evidence is in. Whether you think humans are responsible for global warming or not, it is happening, and we have only a small window of time to prepare and mitigate its effects," says Senum. "The conference's purpose is to highlight these options and support the community in acting to implement them. That's what makes this conference so special. We will be "putting boots on the ground" and not just talking about it."
The conference is produced by local activist and world adventurer Reinette Senum and is sponsored by the local grassroots organization, APPLE (Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy), one of California's leading community groups in addressing the problems of oil depletion. Like last year's event, this year's conference hopes to attract a wide cross-section of the community.
The program includes keynote speaker, Guy Dauncey, the author of Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change. Dauncey's solutions to global warming revolve around 12 core methods of reducing our use of fossil fuels and filling our energy needs with solar, wind, tidal, and biofuels.
Also presenting will be Gary Gardner, Director of Worldwatch Institute and author of Invoking the Spirit: Religion and Spirituality in the Quest for a Sustainable World. Gardner will be speaking on the emergence of a worldwide, pro-environmental coalition between religious and environmental organizations.
To keep climate change solutions applicable to our specific region, presentations will also be given by locals Carol Kennedy and Julie Leimbach. Kennedy is Watershed Specialist at USFS-Sierra Nevada Research Center and will speak about climate effects on Sierra Nevada forests. Leimbach is Community Groups Coordinator of Sierra Nevada Alliance and she will be presenting SNA's Climate Change Tool Kit.
In addition, Reinette Senum will be showing video footage and sharing experiences of Hurricane Katrina and the lessons she captured from this catastrophe.
The day's events will end with a public forum with all the presenters, and an opportunity for attendees to brainstorm practical actions we might take in our community.
Senum encourages everyone to attend this conference, whether they believe our actions are causing climate change or not. "We stand at an unprecedented crossroads with limited time and resources to change the trajectory of this bullet train we're riding. The objective of the Climate Change Conference is not only to inform the public of viable solutions, but implement immediate action. Together we can all make a difference."
Food vendors and resource booths will be present. You can come for the whole day, or just a quick visit. To offset costs, a donation of $5 - $30 at the door is requested, but not required.
